I love reading about the history of the Côte d’Azur and have a big pile of books about this region. Especially how painters, poets and writers have been inspired by the landscapes and light of the Mediterranean. You only need to see the sun shining on the ancient walls of Antibes to understand....I have no idea how many photos I have taken of this view! From Renoir to Chagall, from Picasso to Monet and Matisse this region is scattered with art from the finest painters. “La Route de la Côte d’Azur des Peintres” is a free guide that has plaques showing various artists perspectives in Antibes, Cannes, Grasse, Menton and a few other towns. I took these photos in the morning of a few spots facing Antibes: • ‘Antibes’ 1905, H.E Delacroix • ‘The harbour of Antibes’ 1893 by Eugène Boudin • ‘The lovers by the ramparts’ 1985, Raymond Peynet; if this painting looks familiar you may recognise it from a mural on the wall in the Salle de Mariage where couples get married at Antibes Mairie. There’s also a statue at Place Nationale outside the Musée Peynet. I wonder how many people just walk past and don’t slow down to appreciate what is around them.
